While working for a CDN I learned that every press of the Windows 10 Start button involved at least one call to at least one remote hostname to fetch data about the local weather to be shown in the Start menu. I presume machines were caching the response for a while, but realizing that this host was getting poked (and who knows how many others) every time someone clicked that button continues to blow my mind.

I refer to the ISO 639 list of language names and codes when labeling foreign film titles.

The Greek word for the modern Greek language is ελληνικά (el-len-ni-KA), so ISO 639 gave it the abbreviation “EL”.

This gets legitimately confusing when languages don’t neatly match up with the country names like “Deutsch” (DE) for German, “Gaeilge” (GA) for Irish Gaelic, Burmese (MY) for Myanmar, etc, so I keep that ISO list handy and refer to it a ton.

Edit: Well shit; I’ve been labeling Japanese wrong this whole time. It’s apparently supposed to be “JA”, not “JP”. Which is already weird since it’s actual name is 日本語 (ni-HON-go).
