I don’t disagree, but until I start self hosting, I would rather support the competition.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I hope Lemmy gets big enough to make the mainstream news...
4·20 hours agoYeah I got stoked for the 404 article. Keep up the original posts folks!

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Transliterated country names into Chinese Language use pre-existing characters that already has its own meaning, therefore native Chinese speakers have a subconcious impression based on country names.
2·1 day agoI think your perspective and critique is valid and interesting but it can be helpful to assume the best in people, especially when giving a critique.
In my experience, kids (and adults) love the fact that Iceland is greener and Greenland is icier, so it’s not surprising to me that other languages have similar odd names. It’s not surprising to me that some people would have a biased opinion of a place due to an odd name, but like Iceland I expect many know much more about a country than just the name and thus the name doesn’t hold much weight.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•The richest people in the world are morally bankrupt
4·2 days agoThis was reported for not being a shower thought. It’s certainly not hard to get a bunch of up votes on Lemmy by saying “ultra rich people bad”, and I agree. At the same time I understand people that want to limit the community to more ‘typical’ shower thoughts, like on r/showerthoughts.
I error on the side of leaving posts up. If there is an objective way to enforce what is or isn’t a shower thought, I’m open to ideas from the community.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•In the US 🇺🇸 , more than twice as many people die in car crashes as in the EU 🇪🇺 (~43k deaths vs ~20k deaths, annually)English
107·3 days agoThe EU population is 450 million people with an average density of 106 people/km2. The US is 350 million at 33 people/km2.
There are probably better metrics than straight density.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Culture no longer exists in our reality today because most of the actors responsible for it have long been deprived of their livelihood.
3·5 days ago^ This was reported for being a troll. I think the reporter is correct. Even the original post is a bit of a troll for the average Lemmy person.
If you choose to reply to this comment, careful not to feed the trolls.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•A photo of myself bruised up summarizes this year for me, what would yours be?
7·11 days agoThanks for posting in shower thoughts.
Rule 2 is that the entire thought must be in the title. Do you think you could edit your post?
Ideally shower thoughts are applicable to lots of people. See the side bar for examples. I guess the idea that the prior year has been bruising, but we made it through, could be generally applicable.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•What's if instead of a dead internet we end up with a dark forest internet
2·15 days agoThis is something I’m very curious about. It seems like a really necessary utility in the future.
A way for people to validate other people but not totally blow away all privacy. Large group chats, email providers, etc already try to solve it. It would be cool to see some powerful open source tooling. Like what Signal is to E2E encrypted chats.

5·23 days agoLiberapay is really nice. I like the payment options they have to minimize the fees, like making 2 years of small “monthly” payments in a single charge to your bank card.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Anti-AI communities might be helping AI training by filtering AI-generated content
2·24 days agoRule 2 is a little gray but if the title reads like a catchy headline, then it’s probably not a complete thought. Another way to think about it, the title should make you want to read more because it’s a good thought, not because it a cliff hanger.
OP, would you mind updating the title with a little more context?
For example if you added “because they are providing training data” to the title. It would seem more like a complete thought to me.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I never understood what it was people did on Twitter. I understand it even less now that it is X.
2·27 days agoI try to be objective where I can but all of the rules have gray area so I try to err on the side of not taking things down. Little nudges from the community, like your comment here, help to shape the community so thanks for being an engaged member!

3DPrinting@lemmy.world•Looking to buy a cheap but best first 3d printer. Ender3 V3, CR-10 SE, or something else?English
2·1 month agoI have a CR-10s that I bought used. I asked the seller to ensure that it worked before I bought it. Most of my problems I had with the printer are due to me trying to make it print faster. If I had just downloaded Cura and used the default profiles it would have served me well.
Learning how to level a bed is probably the most significant skill you will need. It’s not too hard.
