Good, South Korean work drinking culture is incredibly fucked up.
Also, he was found dead from acute alcohol intoxication IN HIS CAR?!
In his home’s parking lot!
I should apply there.
I hear there’s an opening…
What a fucking mess. Ya got personal responsibility on one hand, work camaraderie on the other.
Being ignorant of the fine details, and more importantly, ignorant of South Korean culture, I gotta side with the court. Take a guy who might be prone to drink too much, maybe too unschooled of his limits, put that kinda peer pressure on, damn.
Last job was at a software dev. Fridge was always stocked with booze, even had tequila and salt in the kitchen cabinet. Yeah, we had a few. A few. People would give me the side-eye when I went for beer number 4. Getting hammered was verboten. Not by decree, by culture. And again, I’m wholly ignorant of the culture in this case.
tl;dr: Am ignorant, have an opinion.
It’s a lot cultural, they make you drink. Like legit someone above you in age especially but also rank pours you a glass, you drink. They mention you aren’t drinking enough, you drink.
It’s a mix of intense social pressure, hazing, and pressure to keep your job/advance. It used to be worse, but it’s still really really bad.
