Newer IPS screens actually managed to close the gap almost entirely, to the point where I personally prefer them over most OLED screens. And I used to be a huge OLED fan.
You’ll probably never get pure blacks on a non-OLED display, but good LCDs nowadays are so close you’ll only notice the difference in a completely dark room. Which I think is more than good enough, considering potential OLED issues that never happen on LCDs.
I know what you mean, I’m not a big fan of overly saturated displays. And the refresh rate thing is funny. The first time when I saw “Introducing 144hz” I had a giggle my CRT monitor did that already when I was a kid.
Not sure about that. On notebookcheck they test for pwm and about half of laptop screens have it, last time I checked. But I remember that most of the test winners had it.

I use a ten year old photography monitor, it’s calibrated, and it’s good for everything I use it for.
I still have a couple of old IPS monitors with fluorescent backlights. Colors look better on them than most monitors I’ve seen

I wouldn’t be surprised. There was even a 3840×2400 monitor in the early 2000s. I wanted one so bad but it cost as much as a car.
That’s crazy. You’d have to use SLI or crossfire to run something that high res back then lol.

Basically all IPS displays use pwm as well. Good panels use higher frequencies so they’re harder to notice. But it’s not the rule.

If that’s the case the frequencies are so high they are undetectable by conventional methods? Plenty of displays get tested as not using pwm.
