Mini fun fact: Rare Candy’s Japanese name is ふしぎなアメ which means “Mysterious Candy”.
I suppose that Rare Candy was shorter and “MYSTERYCANDY” (shown in the same way as ragecandybar) doesn’t look as nice or convey meaning that well, because it would incorrectly suggest it has a random effect.
I love translation quirks like this.
There’s a game series called Shin Megami Tensei. It’s often likened to Pokémon for having a similar monster recruitment and battle focus. The spinoff series Persona is quite popular worldwide.
Anyway, SMT has a few stat buff/debuff effects. These differ from game to game, but the base three are Raku, Taru, and Suku. Add the suffix -kaja or -nda to denote a buff or debuff.
Most games have an ability that boosts all three at once, usually called “Lustre Candy” in English. The Japanese name for the skill is ラスタキャンディ, RaSuTa Kyandi.
They’ve taken the initial syllable of each buff, and it also happens to map perfectly onto how you’d spell “Lustre” using kana.
Some games have more of these buff skills. IMAGINE split them based on if they affected physical/magical attack/defence, so it had like five rather than the usual three.
Also, the “candy” part of it’s name comes from the fact that in it’s first appearance (SMT if…) it was a consumable item instead of a spell.
Ah! I was wondering about that! Thank you! I haven’t played If… yet.
The German translation is Sonderbonbon which is Special candy (or special bonbon).
I debated with myself 3 times over on how to translate it better and every time I concluded that yours can’t be translated better atm.
Time to hunt down Rusty and challenge his Perfect Bidoof.
