This was a circa 1975 game/kit from Milton Bradley for children to make shrunken heads.
The heads were desiccated apples, and the kit included dehydrating powder. After Before (see correction from catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone in thread) desiccating your apple, you would carve eyes and other features into it, a bit like a pumpkin. Then the kit supplied hair, eyes, bits of cloth, and other items to affix to it, to fashion your very own shrunken head.
The master of horror cinema himself, Vincent Price lent his non-shrunken visage to the box.

You carved the head after desiccating it? I’ve only made it (sans kit) once or twice, but I thought the point was that you carve first and then the desiccation makes subtle changes to the face as it dries to make it more old and wrinkled looking
That is once or twice more than I ever made it, so I imagine you are right.
I will update the text.
I’ve never done the kit so I can’t say that’s not how the kit does it! If it does that’s just very strange, haha
Gotcha. Well IMO your idea seems more sensible than the one I posted. If somebody else comes along with more authoritative info, I can correct it again. In the meantime, I do suspect you are right!

It’s like a Spooky Potato Head!
