The real trigger is always in the
commentsreplies.
It’s just a more enjoyable experience.
Which decision was this in reference to? I’m guessing this was parodying something there was drama about.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What are the pronouns they/them in your language?
1·2 days agoMost European languages have no equivalent, since everything is gendered, not just pronouns. Efforts to embed equality in those languages go the other way - adding female gendered terms for male-dominated professions and vice-verse, as opposed to removing gender which is just too hard.
Russian in particular is spoken in places where they’re hostile to the whole idea. They have a neuter gender, and you might see it used in a mocking “it” kind of way for queer people of all kinds.
For languages outside the Indo-European and Afro-Asiatic families it’s usually a moot issue; 3/4 have no grammatical gender features at all.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Which FOSS projects do you financially support and why?
5·3 days agoWhich open source projects have large expenses? Buying the creator a coffee is nice, but if money is actually required for something to exist I’d rather give there.
Right now I’m extremely poor, but maybe someday I’ll be in the same boat as OP. My Lemmy instance and Tor come to mind, and then maybe Wikipedia, although I know their aggressive fundraising has already worked.
Edit: Oh shit, the Invidious instance I use should probably go first.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
2·2 days agoTwo out of the five never got real political power, though. Meanwhile McCarthyism blew over because it was just a component of a larger panic within a healthy democracy, and the Contract with America looks like it amounted to a slight reorganisation of congress in the end.
The whole racist South thing is a more reasonable comparison. Although it was a time when things went by region a lot more, and the larger north could apply pressure. I can’t really see a Lincoln or fifteenth amendment coming to the rescue the same way this time around. Just, who’s left to stand up to MAGA?
I should probably throw in the Gilded Age too as it seems to fit with our current situation nicely. We had a decent progressive push after the last one.
Sort of? Inequality took on a different character after Teddy, but the roaring 20’s is often lumped into the gilded age anyway. That’s because it wasn’t really a political (or spiritual) movement so much as wealth self-accumulating like it always tends to in agricultural civilisation. You were right to leave it out.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
3·3 days agoTo visit. Immigrating is a whole other thing - this BBC retrospective paints a pretty clear picture in the section about the village. I remember reading an account of somebody that’s been going to the same corner store run by the same guy for decades, but who still gets followed around because “foreigners commit crime”.
Looking Asian might make it worse if anything, because Japan has less than awesome relations with other Asian countries, and some of them come with a poverty stigma.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
3·4 days agoI’m afraid not. Although, that’s the least of your problems if you’re coming to Canada. You need to qualify competitively and immigration levels are tight right now, while our housing market catches up. If you can do that, getting a job as an educated American should be easy.
What I can do at my current moment in life basically amounts to personal favours, that’s it. I’m not even in a convenient location for crashing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is used as an insult, but doesn't really feel like one?
1·4 days agoYou know it refers to your own mother, right? Like, it means you commit incest.

1·4 days agoLots of ideologies can be used as an accusation depending on context.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What will happen if a huge number of active, adequate people come on lemmy, for example, 1 million in 2026?
5·4 days agoA million? It will break.
Ten or a hundred thousand would be good, though. I expect as it grows it will follow the community trajectory of Reddit pretty well, although we’ll know not to nominate ourselves detective when there’s a marathon bombing.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
1·4 days agoHmm. Well, that’s true, what’s emerging is a lot more of a corrupt morass than an actual, defined one-party system like China has. Maybe something else will grow out of it, but that remains to be seen.
How it acts on the world stage more China-like though. Nativist, aggressive and clueless but still taken seriously because they’re so huge. Probably the economic policy too - China is a lot more protectionist than Russia.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
3·5 days agoI haven’t noticed a change in my daily life based on who is president for my entire life.
I mean, that’s true everywhere, even long-authoritarian places. It takes time for the crap happening at the top to roll down.
Obviously, it eventually does.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
81·5 days agoIt’s actually why I don’t see any forcing back to normalcy happening. If there were extremists on both sides it’d be a kind of level playing field, and someone in the center could rally support for reforms to stop the chaos. As it is, democracy is just being hollowed out bit by bit, and there’s no incentive to stop.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How many of you are actually fine with living in USA or are you planning on moving some where else?
2·5 days agoWhere does it say that? As far as I can tell it’s just job offers.
But yes, our housing market got fucked so we’re scaling immigration back for a few years. Hopefully we get back to it afterwards, since from our perspective it’s free population, and obviously it’s good for the immigrants.

There’s never-ending drama in any significant FOSS project, if you go looking for it, so I have to ask.
