That’s the real question, isn’t it? When our employers demand more of our time than we get to spend with our actual families, the take-it-slow life just isn’t a possibility. Unless you’re independently wealthy.

Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would you do if you found out that your mother or sister was a sex worker?3·5 hours agoI’d have an open and respectful discussion with them, asking the following questions: Are they safe? Are they in full control of the money they earn? Is this their own decision? Are they happy? If they answer positively to all of these questions, then I wouldn’t have anything more to say. It’s their body and their life, not mine.
Second this. I don’t really listen to a lot of mainstream stuff, so Bandcamp is really awesome for finding really great indie stuff.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the "keeping it real" history that Americans are taught the whitewashed version in school?7·4 days agoHeheh…a very wise man once told me that ‘every truth begins as a heresy’. In the 30+ years since I was told this, I have found it to be completely accurate. :)
I think it’s okay as long as it is a temporary thing. I would definitely look into a quality therapist who can address any underlying issues.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are your favorite social media platforms?9·4 days agoI honestly prefer Lemmy over Mastodon. My experience with Mastodon has been one of screaming into the void with very little actual engagement with anyone. Also, it just seems like everyone is trying to sell their product or advertise their blog. It probably depends on which tags one chooses to follow, but I grew tired of it very quickly. I haven’t had the same experience with Lemmy for whatever reason, which is why I prefer it.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the "keeping it real" history that Americans are taught the whitewashed version in school?101·4 days agoAs has been mentioned before - Howard Zinn. His ‘A People’s History of the United States’ is jaw-dropping. This book literally changed my life.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK Employers do NOT verify your total work history unless you're applying for a government position.7·4 days agoRight, so leaving jobs off your resume is probably not a good idea. Year-long gaps in your employment history will get you passed on, as well.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK Employers do NOT verify your total work history unless you're applying for a government position.3·4 days agoSo if you’re keeping off any jobs that you’ve worked at for less than 2 years, does that mean you lie about dates to cover up the gaps?
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are most religious people so easy to manipulate? (serious)1·5 days agoReligion isn’t the only arena that has charlatans, manipulators and con artists.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your opinion on "restocking fees"? Greedy retailer? Or do you think the fees are justified?21·5 days agoWhich, if the retailer has any kind of a brain, will be followed by a polite request for a demonstration of how you were using said tool when it broke. They know what to watch for to identify scammers, trust me.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your opinion on "restocking fees"? Greedy retailer? Or do you think the fees are justified?211·5 days agoI believe a fair and reasonable restocking fee is absolutely justified when customers try to game the system. Having worked in several retail establishments over the years, I can tell you that this sort of behavior is rampant and I’ve seen lots of really shady shit from people, including:
- Buying clothes for a special event and then trying to return them the next day.
- Buying a tool to fix something in your home, and then trying to return it the next day.
- Breaking an item that you purchased, and then wanting to return it, claiming that it is defective.
People are opportunists. If there are no controls in place to keep some people from doing shitty things, some people will do shitty things.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How much of a deal breaker would be a high body count for you?3·6 days agoIf there are no STI’s involved, I fail to see how it’s anyone else’s business. Unless your partner decides to willingly divulge this info, of course.
I meant the type of event where nudity is present and expected.
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there is a social media propaganda campaign going on right now?431·6 days agoThere is always a social media propaganda campaign going on. On just about any subject you can think of. Is this really the first time you’re noticing? You do know that governments, political parties and corporations employ people whose only job is to study and manipulate social media trends, right? What do you think a social media ‘influencer’ is?
Fletcher@lemmy.todayto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are most religious people so easy to manipulate? (serious)1231·7 days agoPeople with a highly metaphysical worldview are easier to deceive and manipulate because their normal logic barriers have already been broken down - ie, if you already believe that the earth and everything on it was created by an omnipotent superbeing in six days, it’s not much of a further leap to believe that demons are making you horny.
Sure, at some point we all have to realize that our actions may attract unwanted attention and take appropriate precautions. That being said, no means no. If a lady is obviously uncomfortable by your presence, put on the big boy pants and move on - don’t try to argue your case or convince her of anything. Just move on and leave her the hell alone.
When someone leaves you a home for nothing when most of the people around you cannot afford one, that is ‘wealth’. If I did not have to worry about rent, healthcare and car payments, that would make me wealthy - because it is the wealthy who do not have these concerns to the same degree as the majority of the population. Generational wealth is also a great way to keep the ‘undesirables’ out of a community - and has been used so multiple times in the past. It’s one of the reasons why people from poor families statistically end up just as, or even more poor than their parents.
