Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Gabe Newell (CEO of Valve) bought and owns the megayachts company OceancoEnglish
262·1 month agoNo, Valve is privately owned. That means the company does whatever the owners want it to do. Unlike public companies which can be sued by their own shareholders of they don’t pursue profits hard enough.
That’s not to say we should blindly idolize a billionaire, but he and in turn Valve can in fact do things that are friendly to consumers.
I’ve been sending these SpongeBobs to my friends and lighting up their days, thank you for making them 🙏

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•Anthropic joins the Blender Development Fund as Corporate Patron
43·4 months agoI think the main counter argument to this is a practical one. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, all these greedy corporations have contributed to many open source projects and initiatives. Google has a strong influence in defining web standards, should we ditch web browsing? Amazon and even Microsoft have contributed to Linux either trough donations or direct contributions, both in the kernel and in foundational software that runs on top of it. Should we ditch using Linux servers?
What shows is that while money can corrupt it is not an inevitability. So instead of ditching Blender because Anthropic donates to it I’d suggest ditching Blender only if and when they start rolling out vendor-locked Antrophoc AI integrations rather than take a dogmatic ai company = bad stance.

Only American exeptionalism will teach you the rest of the world is supposedly as least as bad as the US is.
