I didn’t say I think it’s art. I don’t know if it is, and I don’t really care if it is or not. I also don’t care if it’s called art. I’m just saying the mental gymnastics of trying to convince someone that something like programming as art is cringe.

I certainly don’t disagree with the points made in the video. It in fact points out something related to what I’m saying. He states he notices that people that claim something is not art are often gatekeeping something from becoming “elevated.” I’m extending the converse argument: many people trying to claim something is art are trying to elevate it to a new status.

My problem with calling programming art is not that I don’t think programming is art, but rather that I think that label is not useful in this context. Programming is something that is very much valued without that label. Thus adding the label is just an attempt to tack on unneeded elevation to the craft. In some ways the video supports my viewpoint. The debate over what is art is a bit tired. It’s worth having, but personally I don’t think it is needed in this case.

I honestly think trying to define programming as art is just an attempt to unnecessarily elevate it. Programming is utilitarian. It is meant for a specific practical purpose. It does not reveal a shared human experience the way a movie, book, or game does. I have no need to convince myself, a professional software engineer of this because I am perfectly happy accepting that what I do is useful and do not need to try to put myself in a category with artists.

All the author is saying is that people enjoy programming. I also enjoy eating. Is that an art? I even have my own “eating style” in that I like to eat food in specific order, combine two items into one bite, the way I build a bite, etc. But I’d never try to elevate it because I’m a normal person who doesn’t waste brainpower trying to make myself feel special.

I have put on that much muscle. I just refuse to buy any kool-aid that’s being sold to me. Maybe they should bring proof instead of spreading trends blindly?

That is abnormal imo. Americans do not generally like “squishy” or “slimy” textures, which eggplant tends to have even when cooked properly. I’ve always thought of eggplants as being more popular among East Asians.

I actually finished this recently, and to me, the old abilities were almost completely irrelevant. There are legitimately times where you might think that wonderwing is the solution to something, but arbitrarily is programmed to not work.

I still really like BT, and even prefer it over the first in some aspecta. However, it is a perfect example of how powerups were implemented poorly back then (and even today). Instead of powerups enhancing the core gameplay loop, they are just keys to solve shallow puzzles. “Oh, there’s a crack in the wall? Shoot it with a grenade egg.” This is why Mario games have much more emphasis on evolving gameplay through level design rather than character abilities.

The best way to “stand up for yourself” when a company that sells a luxury product is to not buy said product. In which case this tariff nonsense doesn’t affect you. More people were affect by the increase in the cost of groceries and gas than the cost of a Switch 2.

IMO I think it’s weird to focus specifically on Nintendo. The American government basically screwed over its populace and a ton of foreign companies (less sympathy for the latter though). I don’t think it’s realistic to expect these companies to reimburse customers, because logistically it’d be a nightmare. The only way I can imagine consumers getting their money back is if the government used the tarrif money to pay a portion of the federal income tax for its citizens, ideally the lower tax bracket. Unfortunately that won’t happen.
