Me neither. I read a couple of descriptions of striped cuckoos. None mentioned this tidbit and that made me suspicious.

It includes a picture of a nest with a cuckoo chick and, although it doesn’t look like a pine cone, you can easily make out the speckled feathers. Also, the article is interesting in asserting that the cuckoos’ parasitism isn’t all bad.

I can’t help with the Roman version, but it sounds familiar to the take I heard on the Myths and Legends Podcast (if I’m remembering it right): Medusa becomes beautiful, Poseidon rapes her, Athena blames Medusa for getting raped and makes her hideous. I don’t remember if Athena tops it off by compelling Perseus to murder Medusa, but she at least gives him the shield and the instructions on how to do it.

So, not a fironin. Damn, I was so sure at first. I think the Fironin Support Network needs to do more public outreach.
Technically, I think this guy is what is called a “fironin”–he was a fireman until his firehouse burned down, killing the fire chief. Now he wanders suburbia, seeking short-term employment monitoring barbeques during block parties.
Edit: did Japanese people use those horizontal closures? If he’s Chinese, I can offer no context.

I didn’t have a specific once in mind, no. But spider-bots are not uncommon in sci-fi and it seems to me that robots with tentacle cables are equally common in the horror sub-genre. That’s what it reminded me of, is all.
You haven’t watched enough sci-fi if you don’t see this as a set up for spider machines murdering a bunch of peaceful colonists/researchers. Well, ok, one guy is a complete asshole and he’ll be directly responsible for the machines coming to life, but he’ll get his.
Is there supposed to be something weird about this picture? From hiding random furniture parts behind a potted plant to a record collection of three to five unlabeled records, it all seems perfectly normal. And that is definitely how I store my books…
