  • Not arguing with anything but your numbers. Gross pay is not net pay. My net is 60% of my gross with family health insurance taken out , and taxes (but mostly health insurance).

So that could be closer to 5k a month, let’s say 6 to be generous. Rent here for anything that will fit a family is close to 3k. Another thousand on top for student loans, then electric bill, car insurance or transit $, more people means more food, I can see it might be tight.

Still not anything to really complain about money wise but legit IMO to complain about student loans in general. Education from K through university or trade school needs to be free for students, the economy would work better.

  • It’s a little worse than that, believe it or not. That site development was abandoned in the first place because of environmental concerns. So it’s harming the Everglades, keeping it from draining as well, meaning it could actually cause worse flooding in a hurricane, FEMA funds being used to make disasters worse.

  • It’s hot & humid here in the subtropics but even so I love this season the most. I was born here and grew up without AC so adapted I guess. Being still in the shade with a breeze I am comfortable up to a pretty high temp but here the summer has afternoon storms that cool it a little so the evening, while hot, is usually 25-27 not 40.

Our indoor AC is set to 26. That feels cool enough in the summer, so evening is comfortable.

I cannot get comfortable in the cold, no amount of clothing seems to work, I just don’t generate that much heat.

Riding home on the bike is MUCH safer in the daylight too.

  • My homemade sourdough costs more than store bread, but not more than fancy sourdough bakery bread. I can’t buy flour wholesale, don’t make that much bread. But when it’s good it’s better than any bakery bread I’ve had. So, better, probably not cheaper.

Home cooked meals vs. restaurants does save money.

Gardening - most things work out cheaper than buying, though as I am a salaried worker I am not allocating labor cost.

If it were to be compared to doing 1.5x pay overtime, then working more would make more money than we could save by doing cooking and gardening, it would always work out better to spend that time at work. But then the health impact of doing all that work and always eating out would have to be factored in.

  • Smaller user base. It is both good and bad but the community for my city is dead (probably there were only like 8 of us on here).

Am old enough to know from experience that the early people on any platform are the computer geeks so expect the tech communities to thrive first - but as someone else said, music communities die, sports, arts, things that are pretty widely popular. Honestly happy with the slow and steady growth of the !cocktails@lemmy.world so if it’s an indicator, the general interest people are joining just not quickly but some must be sticking. I would guess at some point it will be perfect then too big but who knows?

Personally I also miss the nonsexual nudes threads like nakedprogress and normalnudes. Again that’s a lack of users issue, you need a lot of people willing to post, to have even a few willing to post nude.

I always figured bi (or pansexual) was the default setting for humans. Most guys at least are flexible, if there is not a woman around any port in a storm, and if you weren’t raised with any conditioning it seems more normal to love individuals, not categories.

  • I’m guessing you are a dude. As a woman - I am usually a medium now, which makes logical sense, but sometimes need S or L, even in stuff from the same company. Or something called a 28 or 29, even though no part of me is 29" around. Sizing of clothing for women is wildly inconsistent, and even the size charts don’t help, they lie.

So I do use those recommendations.

  • I was on Reddit a long time, never had a Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Snapchat, back in the dark ages I used Usenet but not AOL or Myspace or anything like that. I try not to use much that is not anonymous.

For a couple of years now just Lemmy, in those two years I have put I think 4 posts on Reddit (people with local questions, Lemmy is not big enough for a good local sub.), and look at it maybe once every two months, not browsing but in answer to specific questions.

I wouldn’t describe myself as hardcore, though. Regular person. I look at the phone’s news feed, talk to other people, get information other places.
