83·22 hours agoNot so much.
Sex and gender are distinct elements. So whilst they’re not the same thing, they do interact with each other and influence each other to some extent or another. If they didn’t, then the world wouldn’t be full of people whose gender and sex are in alignment. For that matter, if they didn’t, we wouldn’t even understand the concept of sex and gender being in alignment.
Also, “transgenderism” is a term popular with transphobes, because it frames trans people as a belief/ideology, rather than acknowledging their identity.
no non-sapient creature can ever be trans, because you need consciousness to have a gender identity in the first place.
But for all of that, strictly speaking, this is true.

92·22 hours agoWere it a “curious, socratic style question” you wouldn’t have framed your question with loaded terminology designed to make trans people sound unreasonable and fake.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that Stanford scientists recently examined what happens when people stop using social media. They found deactivating Facebook and Instagram improved users' emotional well-being and happinessEnglish
4·2 days agoFriends was probably the wrong word. What I was really referring to is community and social events. My good friends are still there in my life, but the broader queer community is now harder to connect with, and lots of social events and meetups that are happening in my city happen without me even knowing.

23·2 days agoI experienced this when I got rid of facebook (or more accurately, when I wouldn’t provide them with my ID to get my account unlocked).
But the other side of it is that a lot of the social groups that I was involved with, and a lot of my contact with my friends, was done through facebook, and my real world social life has been impacted by losing facebook.I still wouldn’t go back, but it’s a first hand example of just how wide the facebook network effect can reach.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your choice for a dedicated Linux audio player?English
8·2 days agoFeishin. It’s a navidrome/jellyfin player.
I love it, because it has smart playlists that are actually smart! It lets me create “random” playlists from my music collection, in a way that works for me.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit files lawsuit against Australia after site is banned for anyone under 16English
6·2 days agoI grew up as a closeted queer kid in rural Australia, before the internet was widely available. I had zero connection with other queer kids, and no way to develop the language or connections that I needed to help me understand what was going on.
Social media gives that to queer kids. It lets them find their peers and know that they’re not alone. It gives them people to talk to and support them when they’re bullied (which they will be, even without social media).
This “protects” some vulnerable kids by throwing other vulnerable kids under the bus. Whilst at the same time, setting the way for legislation like this https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-07-11/age-verification-search-engines/105516256, which is what it’s really about.

Transgender@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Skate Canada to stop holding national, international events in Alberta | CBC NewsEnglish
7·2 days agoRoller derby (another form of skating) is also one of the few sports out there to take a principled approach on trans inclusion. I mean, look at this https://resources.wftda.org/membership/diversity-and-inclusion/wftda-statement-about-gender/. There’s also a league suing a local governement in New York County, for denying them access to public parks whilst they includes trans women.
If more sports did this, and pushed back in some form or another, it would mean the world.

9·6 days agoThere was a tiny amount of light, enough for me to use manual focus to find the right focus point. And once I did that, I just did a long exposure (1 second in this case)
1 second would be WAY too long for most birds, because they don’t sit still, but Frogmouths are ambush predators, that sit perfectly still for hours on end until prey comes close. Also, the lens and the camera body are image stabalised, so I was able to hand hold the camera (with great care) to make it all work.
