I allowed redundancy to your instance. I had allowed ti everywhere and then i was seeing some super weird traffic. So I disabled everything and it’s on a per instance basis now. :-) Thanks for doing that and glad you’re enjoying it! Any constructive criticism is always welcome btw.

I’m seeing traffic. Receiving inbox requests and “Do not accept remote redundancy” (I disabled it, but if you’d like to be redundant I can explicitly add you). I’ve hit similar issues in the past. The best I can tell you is restart Peertube, give it 24 hours and it should catch up. I’ve actually set both FsF and TubeFree to recycle nightly to make sure they stay caught up. Chocobozz, dev of Peertube, is aware of it, but idk how high of a priority it is.

Actually going to be talking with Robert W. Gehl tomorrow on Fireside Fedi! I just found out about him, a few weeks ago, and he’s written extensively on social media. I’ve unfortunately not been able to acquire any of his books to prepare, but they seem to all be incredibly interestingly titled.

I have a friend that also brought up discoverability as an issue, so she stayed on Twitch. Twitch also has a massive discoverability problem and they have numerous tools, but there’s so much noise it’s impossible to rise above it.

With Owncast discoverability is organic atm. It’s a tiny, but growing pond. Like anything else anymore, if you want to be discovered you have to do the leg work.

But it’s definitely NOT Twitch and you won’t get famous or make tons of money.

What you can do though is control your platform, stream what you want, etc.

I personally LOVE Owncast. It’s how I’ve met numerous folks and built a community. I use my own for games and tech, https://stream.ozoned.net/ . I’ve even done some testing to see how much overhead it needs, https://video.firesidefedi.live/w/1itGRqF41XeTfrismnsesL , and how many opens streams you can have.

I’ve spoken to numerous folks that flat out tell me it can’t work. With THOUSANDS of people you’d probably hit bandwidth limitations, but there’s S3 buckets and CDNs. Whether they’ll let you push livestreams to those for the long term is yet to be seen.

I’m very biases though as I love Owncast, I love controlling MY platform, and I love Fedi. Also I run the unofficial owncast community.

Asking the tough questions.

It’s a spoontula, cousin of the spork. It is created when a spoon and a spatula love each other enough to transcend reality. Just don’t ever let two spoontulas stay in one area as they’re very territorial and will attack each other. That’s how the spoon drawer gets all messed up.

Welcome folks, be friendly, get to know people. I’ve started a podcast, because I had this exact question. I talk to folks from around the fedi and just have a fireside chat. We need more projects like this that show who and what we are and it has to be shown outside of Fedi as well.

Oh I absolutely do it for passion. LOVE talking with folks, especially about foss and open platforms. And definitely haven’t made really any money. And any money goes to TubeFree or back to the Fediverse somehow. I’ve definitely spent way more than I’ve made. Lol
