Personally I get sleep paralysis almost weekly. It’s always disembodied voices as opposed to incubus’ or succubus’ (I wish!)

Accidentally doxxed myself the other day on IRC by repeating my Dad’s favourite dream anecdote. A psychicatrist (or philosopher depending on when he tells it) has a dream that he’d invented the funniest joke of all time, was famous and doing tours of SNL and others just telling the joke. He woke up in the night remembering it and it was just gibberish when he looked in the morning. I said I wasn’t sure if my Dad had just made it up. Someone looked for sources online and the only source was my Dad’s blog which had pictures of me at my wedding on it. Trying to keep this vague to avoid doxxing myself again. My life is basically Big Fish where my Dad loves to tell tall tales like this. Fortunately not too affected by this foible unless I mention it online. Looking forward to seeing the psychiatrist/philosopher at his funeral to be proved wrong like the end of that movie.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is "Egyptian" music shown in movies etc. historically accurate in terms of instruments used? Like this one where the author claims to be "ancient" as well.

Aside from bug/issue spam where maintainers are stuck dealing with bogus problems raised by LLMs and posted by lazy humans, I don’t think there ought to be an issue. Maintainer burnout is no joke though; a bad day topped off with a bogus bug report might be the straw breaking a camel’s back.
The other issue is licensed code with stricter copy left protections can be stolen for training data and unwittingly regurgitated into a code base elsewhere. Unfortunately this would require lawyers to actually bring these cases to court, which is not happening at the moment. Seems more manageable as an issue though since there is a path to resolving it. I think I need to make an EFF donation to help with that process.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner?
2·1 month agoKind of similar with Ank.Spon. just been prescribed biologic drugs but waiting for an appointment to receive them.
Was originally having dicofenac with is an NSAID like ibuprofen but stronger - wasn’t working - so they bumped me up to etoricoxib but got side effects from that like an upset stomach so was advised to stop.
They hold off on the biologics because they are super expensive and only the NHS can dole them out. Apparently they originally designed them for Parkinsons disease but turns out they are a miracle cure for Ank.Spon. Fingers crossed it works out! Would like to be able to get out the flat more often, even going to the office like 3 days a week.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I'm gonna chemically castrate myself, should I tell my parents? (I am 26)
31·1 month agoEcho all the other people here saying that you should be discussing this with medical professionals.
However - and forgive me for this if I’ve misinterpreted your post - if you think that chemical castration might remove a temptation that you might hurt someone then I’d recommend proceeding with it. Additionally, depending on exactly what the reason you can’t have “normal” relationships, there are some situations that you cannot discuss it with your parents without putting immense amounts of strain on your relationship.
Abstract Base Classes just remind people of Java lasagna code. Whereas XYZ is inseparable from Hilary Putnam’s water analogue in his famous Twin Earth thought experiment.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•I want to leave fb. Where is a similar place?
4·1 month agoI’ve been off Facebook for over a decade now but have been unable to leave the META ecosystem due to the ubiquity of WhatsApp in the UK. There’s not really a good alternative in terms of IM apps because the other popular ones seem to have made a USP out of appealing to criminals.
Was doing pager duty support and there was a bug in a pipeline which was preventing a vital report from being generated. It had to exist by 8AM UTC and finally got it working at 5:30AM. My company would have lost its license to operate in a certain state if the report had not been generated.
IRC is still pretty popular with programmers and in my experience people are helpful on the various tech channels (on libera.chat at least)

Xorg is a display manager; emacs is the best window manager, email client, irc client, web browser, tetris implementation, elisp runtime environment/dev environment… it might edit text too but idk.

Yeah my parents had me when they were 40 and 38 respectively so they are now mid-70s while I’m in my 30s. They are definitely slowing down; taking longer to process new information, forgetting small things, etc. I can feel them reaching the age soon where the roles might reverse and they will start relying more on me. Fortunately I’ve got a good relationship with them and live close by.
