It’s really clear with that movie that the original ending was for the guy to stay dead. The movie chickens out and loses its real pathos by letting him both sacrifice himself and still get to be alive again.

If this story is even real, I don’t think the kid was trying to make a joke. And if you heard a kid saying they remember things from before they were born, you might not believe them but it’d still raise an eyebrow
