      He was never very good at telling people how he was feeling. He told lies, hurt a lot of people. Some say he even gave them up and deserted them when things got tough. Even those he knew for so long.

          This is pretty much actually on par for serial killers.

          Off the top of my head, Tacoma PD had the Green River Killer in custody a LOT, knew he frequented sex workers, knew he had violent incidents with them fairly often, had a bunch of evidence like paint drops that linked him to bodies and body sites, and several other sex workers had told them that “hey he was the last person I saw with [murder victim]”, but Gary Ridgway simply didn’t fit the police’s idea of a serial killer. The idea was that he had to be suave and hyper intelligent and not this bumbling fuck who screwed up painting trucks for a living.
