Probably why he was charged instead of let go. It seems pretty rare that the driver is charged so the fact that he was definitely shows he was at fault. Hopefully it sticks and he is prosecuted fairly for his awful actions.
I doubt it. The Canadian court system is in fucking shambles. I know someone personally who was killed by a reckless driver in Toronto.
It’ll take years to even get to trial, mainly just due to prosecutorial incompetence or negligence, only for the accused to be let off with a slap on the wrist for what is likely a first road offence.
The defence will be allowed to delay a case for ages for frivolous and often false reasons and no one challenges or follows up on anything, and there’s basically no mechanism for holding the crown accountable to doing their fucking jobs as prosecutors.

Not really unique to Canada though. Drivers get away with killing people regularly all throughout the developed world.
