For tablets, they waited until Microsoft’s attempt at tablet computers failed, and then they gave their own twist. I guess there was a time they actively learned from their competitors’ successes and mistakes.
Apple actually claims to have developed the iPad before the iPhone, but the tech was moving fast enough to miniaturize it and release the phone first, I think mostly because everyone had been begging for an iPod-phone for years at that point.
They’d also been improving track pad and OS for years before the iPhone released. Bit to mention the Newton, which failed pretty fast.
Oh man, that brings back memories. I had to work with a first generation HP tablet because my company wanted to ride the hype by supporting “the greatest thing ever”. It was so painful to use

They already had a superior trackpad on MacBooks, so this is an example of them being a first mover- nobody had combined those two technologies.
