      Trump is teaching the World you need to have nukes to be respected.

      And if South American nukes sound far-fetched, Brazil had a nuclear weapons program during its military dictatorship years. But willingly gave up on the program.

        The trouble is that cartels are pretty ineffective at actually making things, they’re mostly only good at stealing things. So manufacturing weapons that are needed to fight the US feels impossible.

          In a head on conflict, sure.

          But the cartel violence has generally been against civilians, so that wild be on the table.

          That said, they might not have the ideological commitment to incur the retribution. They may dislike such an offensive with the bad outcome for them, but they probably know revenge would be even worse.

          But either way, destabilization seems a high risk over unclear benefit.
