    I mean most any media is trash. Why is anime any different than, let’s say, TV shows? The medium doesn’t make it better or worse, it’s the actual quality of the particular series that’s important.

      Look at the synopsis of all of the isekais and then tell me. A large portion of them feature harems, slavery, glorifying slavery, incest and more.

      You’re right, on most media is trash, anime isn’t alone in this.

      Though, anime’s generic trash genre is “cringey hyper sexualized teenagers and how they get their clothes off” and the rabid defenders of that trope leave a bad taste that amplifies how bad it feels.

      Anime is much cheaper to produce than other types of media, so more low quality content gets approval than it might if it cost 5-10x more.

      Because it’s media for kids, which usually means that it’s significantly dumbed down or catered to emotionally developing people. For every Mr Roger’s or Arthur, there are 200 caillous

          The Lego box says 4-99. Just because they can’t understand how to free craft, that doesn’t mean that the toys weren’t made for them.

          Love me some one punch man. The nuances of the characters are entirely lost on the tikes. They’re still the target audience, in spite of their difficulty enjoying it.

            Not for all animes though, i’d never make a kid watch Re:Zero or Berserk, maybe i’d try to make them watch Frieren, i doubt it’d work for more than 10 minutes…

              Frieren’s fine. It’s flashy and charming with an overarching story to engage with, even in the absence of any understanding of the complex grief and nostalgia and existentialism. Kids engage like fern and stark and would probably feel safe and curious about the fleshed out world. Fine for 12+

              Re zero, similarly, is just a very graphic story about self improvement. It’s, if anything, formative and gentle in its extreme horror. It’s The Diner at the End of the Universe, but Subaru is the cow. Fine for 14+ Imo. (I still consider that kids)

              But I agree about berserk. A story about the burden of existence and healing told through nihilism, morbidity, betrayal, and rape is a little too heavy. “Nothing matters, but also fuck you.” That is too many conversations to have in one sitting, and something terrible will slip through the cracks. 17+

              There’ll always be exceptions to the rule. But that’s a bit nitpicky, and denies the overwhelming intent, both in marketing and writing, to create stories for children. Is every one of them for kids? No. Are the tropes and agencies created with kids in mind? Mostly, yes.

        Most media (especially mainstream media) is for emotionally developing people. Generally, if some media is not “for kids” is just because boobs or blood (or both). But let’s not pretend most mainstream media (including anime) has more depth than a puddle.

        Anime is NOT for kids.

        The Great Bride Magus, or Death Parade, or Psycho Pass, or Frieren: After the Journey’s End, or Steins:Gate, or Re:Zero, or Mushoku Tensei, or White Snow with Red Hair.

        These aren’t definitely for kids.

        Stop generalizing based on your shitty lack of knowledge.

          Death parade, great magus bride, psycho pass, steins gate, frieren, and re zero are definitely tooled for teens. Gratuitous violence, edgy themes, society, recognition of change, expectations, etc. are all things that teens can interface with. These stories won’t mean the same thing to them as they do to you, but they stories are not lost on them.

          I like several of your mentions btw. Still accessible media, though.

          Love Psycho-pass, Id add Vinland Saga, First season of One Punch Man, Mushishi, GITs SAC,

          Though directed at children is such a weird idea, like is Terminator 2 directed at children? It’s themes are just as shallow if not moreso than Steins Gate Is Back to the Future directed at adults because it’s PG in the US? Blood gore and boobs does not an adult show make. I don’t know why anime has

          3/4 of those are for early teens. Personally, I only go for real, mature adult anime like boku no pico and Elfen lied

            In this thread you’ll find:

            People falling over themselves trying to justify how material sourced from shōjo and shōnen magazines is actually intended for adults, presumably because they’re adults and they like it.

            I couldn’t care less about adults consuming media primarily targeted toward teens and adolescents. I’m in my thirties and watch anime myself. At no point have I ever tried to convince anyone that teen and ‘young adult’ media is anything else. There’s no shame it enjoying it as an adult, but it does become increasingly less relevant with age.

              Absolutely. Insecurity over intended audience is lame. Like what you like. I have zero judgement. Enjoying kid-friendly media is fine. I’m watching avatar tonight. Doesn’t mean that it’s not for kids, just because the budget is high and the story nuanced

                Quite right. I watch and enjoy Bluey with my partner’s kid so much he now tries to get me to watch Gumball instead. Hehehe. Both good shows. Adult wins.

            Ehhh… No, they’re not. Their story and focus, also their themes, and even their declared demographic (although this one is not that precise, one can declare to be shounen because it’s going to serialize in a shounen magazine despite being seinen [that happened to Attack on Titan, for example, that’s more adult but was serialized on the Weekly Shounen Jump], or vice versa; and it’s the same for shoujo and josei).

            Tell me which ones are “for kids”. I think you have a bias because some of these are from the fantasy genre or have some more light scenes here and there.

            Some anime is for kids, but that’s only the kodomo (literally, children) demographic, and some shounen and shoujo (adolescent) can be really deep as well (such as Hataraku Maou-sama!, despite being principally comedy, it has a really good worldbuilding with great exploration of really important topics, or Log Horizon, that actually explores very well some things like identity, humanity, consciousness and the nature of the self).
