Moscow officially withdrew from the Council of Europe’s European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) on Nov. 1.
The withdrawal comes after Russian authorities notified the Council of Europe of their decision to denounce the convention on Oct. 30, 2025. Under the notification procedure, the denunciation takes effect one year later.
Ukraine remains a signatory of the CPT, alongside 45 other member states of the Council of Europe.
Yeah, because conventions sure keep russians from raping, torturing and murdering people.
It made them feel bad enough about it to leave. So, I think it was a step in the right direction.
What makes you think they felt bad about it?
They felt enough of something to bother to leave.
Oh noes? What will Russia do next, now that they are no longer bound by their word and honour. ಠ_ಠ
They’re not even pretending anymore, so theyve caught up to America in that aspect.
looking forward to a certain portion of fedi attempting to explain how this is all due to NATO
They thought it was like a business convention, where you go, mingle with your peers, and learn about new, exciting trends and techniques in torturing.
As if THAT was holding them back.
