Across wide stretches of the sun-bleached Sonoran desert in Arizona, thousands of retired aircraft sit nose-to-tail in graveyards of metal known as boneyards.

Many of their engines haven’t been fired up for years. But America’s soaring demand for electricity to power data centers is bringing them back to life.

Anything but solar/wind. Under Wind turbines you could still farm crops or place solar panels etc. In coast areas we have to turn off wind generators because we dont need the electricity.

Building new engines is quite energy intensive, in particular if used as a backup. Reusing ones that are unsafe or otherwise inefficient for that may be a harm reducing choice.

Just because it sounds crazy and ridiculous doesn’t mean it is. A jet engine just turns fuel into useful energy. Just like any turbine, really.

Edit: please note that Byop is a retarded concept. The power grid is most efficient if used everywhere to the greatest extend plausible.

It puts more unnecessary heat into the atmosphere to power unnecessary data centers for unnecessary pretend intelligence
