Yeah, thankfully Voyager has keyword blocking. I try to keep it at a minimum, sometimes it’s nice to be unaware.
Piefed has them built in rather then relying on the client. Definitely helps.
+1 I use Voyager and I have blocked words + communities. There are news that you can’t miss, whether is internet, Lemmy, news papers, tv news. We see them again and again.
It’s not users’ fault there’s a lot of politics going on right now.
I’d love to see more international politics, not just usa
For sure. I saw someone commenting yesterday that Russia invading Poland’s airspace was “a distraction from the Epstein files.” Not everything that happens in the world revolves around America’s shitty probably paedophile president!
This comment was a distraction from the Epstein files.
Fair, there’s a lot of stuff that should probably be posted in a “us politics” community instead of “politics,” and some other stuff that should be posted in “politics” in addition to other-country-specific communities.
I usually downvote US stuff in news communities. They should create separate community that we all can block. 🤷♂️
Piefed keyword filters allow to block “Trump”, “Elon”, etc.
It’s probably even more effective than banning politics communities one by one
That doesn’t solve the problem of there being too much US related news.
It limits the issue from the user perspective, I don’t see US news anymore.
To address the issue at the core, !news@lemmy.world shouldn’t be mostly about US news, but the mods of that community never seemed interested in addressing that issue.
There is !usa@midwest.social we could try to push people to, but again unless the mods on !news@lemmy.world add and enforce a “no US news” rule there isn’t much we can do.
And they’re already busy with something else https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/53505862
Its not just now, it’s been months now. Especially with Trump, have you noticed that users post anything he says? Every little thing.
There are rea$on$ 💲💰🤑🫰🪙
Which here on the Fediverse, actually seem to go beyond profit incentive. Morbid curiosity? An odd sense of journalistic integrity like if someone externally made a story about it then surely it must be worth sharing here?
Anyway, there’s also tons of anime and people using Arch Linux btw here - just block what you don’t like and subscribe more to what you do. Also if you want something, surely many others do as well so could be worth creating something new to meet that need.
I’ve found that if you block a few of the worst offenders you’ll mostly see normal news and politics. I’m guessing those accounts that only post political nonsense are bots.
I mod a jrpg community, doesn’t really have much to do with politics, but the top post of all time is this:
Can ague against this post
I had an idea for a community called “shitty art prompts” where people would give bizarre prompts for art for others to work with, but haven’t come around to creating it mainly because I can’t draw for the life of me, and it wouldn’t sit right with me if I created and moderated a community I didn’t have the proper talents to contribute to.
Oh dope, thanks for showing me this!
More politics? Alright: My favorite pizza has anchovies and pineapple
Eh. I’ll try it at least once. Shrimp, bacon, and pineapple is pretty damn good (tasted like a luau), so maybe that’s in the ballpark.
I’m going to double down on the politics and out myself as a pineapple and anchovies grifter—I don’t like either on pizza. Mwahaha
My only problem with anchovies was when I had to deliver it and then my car smelled like that for too long, but as long as they tipped it was ok. Other than that you do you, I’m with you on the pineapples and will defend your right to stinky fish (but would consider it a personal favor if you’d relegate your consumption to pick up instead of thrusting the smell on a poor deliveryman) to the death!
It’s simply that everyone is able to talk about politics and news events.
Not everyone knows every sport, is interested in all video-games, or likes a lot of music, or watches much tv/film etc.
Depends. I’m not American, most of the US politics don’t affect me.
I follow my local news, but that’s a much lower volume what the US news and politics amount to daily.
Depends. I’m not American, most of the US politics don’t affect me.
Fair enough. But much of the world has a good knowledge of US politics even if they are not affected. Including me. And Americans are disproportionately overrepresented on social media sites like this.
Moreover, international news certainly can be commented on.
You feel tye same way about ukraine too. The world is the way it is jecause too many people ignore reality.
You feel tye same way about ukraine too.
How do you know?
So should we drown you with Swedish, Latvian, Spanish, French, Italian, …, Turkish news?
90%+ is ragebaiting Donald trump, musk, or all the other yards in the vicinity of the white house. I’d love a “good” news outlet BTW, I have blocked all the “world” etc.
I didn’t comment on whether or not the prominence of US and international news and politics was good or bad, just explaining why it dominates.
Fair enough, I was also just speaking my mind I guess, sorry if it came around as agressive or wrong.
