I don’t know that couching this as many cases of personal moral failure and irresponsibility is productive when so many are affected. It’s like when conservatives discuss poverty - certainly, many among the affected group could make better choices, but shouldn’t we be motivated to understand what led to their failure from a systematic perspective?
I don’t think I necessarily like Harry, but I sure as fuck empathize with him. Playing him as someone seeking redemption or trying to put his life back together (and SO OFTEN failing) was incredibly meaningful. You put it very well.

For RDR2 in particular, I found it so irksome how on-rails the missions were while the rest of the game was so free form. If you’re going to make me follow in the footsteps you planned exactly, don’t tease me with freedom between your set piece sequences. Ride-shoot-ride is also not super interesting to me.

This was one I loved, but it wasn’t at all what I expected when I read the Steam blurb. “Be the kind of cop you want to be” or some such nonsense.
But, yeah, it’s basically an existential novel masquerading as a game, and if you don’t like (or at least find it interesting) spending time as the protagonist, then it makes sense to be a hard pass.
I’m in this boat with you. A few months ago I restarted my Valheim server for friends… And only one person joined me, for all of about 30 minutes. I spent a bunch of solo time just building up a base and trying not to progress too far so I wouldn’t ruin the fun.
I’ve been toying with the idea of doing a Zomboid server, too, but I know it will be the same. We’ll play as a group maybe twice, and that will be it.

I had a classmate who expressed the same porn preference, although they weren’t obnoxious about it, just casually mentioned it once. I remember being flabbergasted by the idea at the time, thinking that seemed like some pretty weak masculinity. Well, she came out as a trans lesbian a good few years after we graduated, and I realized I was bisexual somewhere in the same period. I guess we both figured out what we liked eventually 🤷♂️

I also played something called the Most Wanted Game, which was a mafia/mob themed game where you could form gang coalitions with others and raid adversaries. I think this concept kind of changed into Mafia Wars on Facebook or Clash of Clans as technology progressed and the social proliferation of the Internet continued. (I could be wrong on that, I never played and Facebook games besides Words with Friends, and have never played Clash of Clans - I just assumed they were both different kinds of successors).
