U.S. Admiral Samuel J. Paparo declined to say under what circumstances he would follow an order to attack Canada, calling a question from a reporter about the issue “needlessly emotional.”
At the Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence conference in Victoria Wednesday, a reporter asked Paparo: “Under what circumstances would you obey an order to launch military action against Canada?”
Paparo, who serves as U.S. commander for the Indo-Pacific region, visibly took issue with the question. He said: “I find that scenario to be absolutely and utterly preposterous.”
He added: “I follow the orders of the commander-in-chief, but that is a needlessly emotional question.”
The reporter pointed out that Paparo did not answer the question. The U.S. admiral said he was dismissing the issue, adding: “Would you ask me please also what my attack plans are for the Martians?”
The reporter replied: “You belittle it and I don’t think that’s the right approach at all. This is a serious question about a serious issue.”
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to turn Canada into the “51st” American state since returning to office in January 2025.
The Canadian military has taken the threats seriously enough to model a response to a hypothetical U.S. invasion, according to senior government officials who spoke to the Globe and Mail this year.
A Nanos poll taken in February found that three in five Canadians are concerned about the U.S. being a potential threat to Canadian sovereignty. A majority also support making it illegal for Canadians to serve in the U.S. military, according to a poll commissioned by The Maple in April.

I’d love to have no WhatsApp in my life. Many years ago, I signed off it as I did with Facebook. Sadly, because of where we are at the moment, my partner is now the main hub for communication with businesses and people who don’t care about or aren’t aware of Meta’s privacy practices. After many arguments, I’m now being forced to share the communication responsibilities and reinstall WhatsApp.
For those who can, I read a suggestion once that struck me with its simplicity: turn your account into a business one and set an automatic reply letting anyone who messages you know that you’ve moved permanently and how to find you.
I’m 100% with you on this. The Dems are also complicit in not ensuring voters knew what illegal activities were happening at the time — when DOGE was in full swing, the left sat on their hands and allowed Musk and his army of hackers to siphon off terabytes of sensitive data. That said, I do believe in a swing of the pendulum, though this time it may swing further to the left than many expect.
The damage is now done and he’s going to get what, a fine or some shit? Doubt it. A shrug and a strongly worded don’t do that again- He will promptly do it again.
Correct me if I’m wrong here. It sounds like because the judge nullified the entire settlement, including the immunity agreement signed by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the legal barrier protecting Trump’s past tax returns from audit has now been struck down.
I know this can be appealed, but at this stage, it sounds like a huge blow shining some serious light on the Trump family’s grifts.

Didn’t see that one coming, color me shocked!
No I haven’t tried any of these 12 apps, I am perfectly happy with Gimp, affinity photo and LibreOffice. I posted this because for one, the opensource community three days ago had a fervent conversation about photocraft, the same developer. Secondly, as written in the rules of the community it says “feel free to ask questions and share news, and interesting stuff.”
I am not promoting anything AI, in fact I hate the direction it is going in and the threat it poses to real developers. That said, there is clearly a plenty of schadenfreude that comes from this, nobody can’t deny its sweet to extend the middle finger to these megacorps.
Not sure where you get the idea that I posted this as a marketing ploy reselling genAI tokens?
