Judging by your downvotes, it looks like many people here neither know nor care that there is a world of difference between Border Patrol and ICE.
Why are US americans against helping each other?
There is no simple answer to your question. Generally speaking, the US ethic is largely built on a foundation of rogue settlers who were encouraged to take what they wanted by force and duplicity. Whether it was the attempted (and ongoing) ethnic cleansing of the tribes, or total destruction of the environment, or massacring fauna to extinction, or the brutal subjugation of African people, early americans operated at a level of entitlement, ignorance, and the absolute belief in a zero-sum competition.
This mindset has been useful to the people in power, and it has been frequently stoked to manipulate a large minority of the population into a fearful and angry existence, effectively preventing a cultural shift that embraces social enlightenment. Even the US education system is designed to perpetuate the propaganda while preventing critical thinking skills and empathy.
Interestingly, even the most virulent USers, on an individual basis, exhibit selective social welfare tendencies, while still maintaining their cultural bigotries. To be fair, most US americans are in favor of social welfare. The rich in the US, who are in control, will always fight reform, because it isn’t profitable to them.
Impressive that the archdiocese has the bandwidth to fire a widower for his gay marriage, while simultaneously juggling their bankruptcy in order to dodge restitution to the 600 raped kids.
Looking at the linked map, the raped states are:
If these 11 states were to secede, they would have a fiscal advantage because many of them give billions of dollars more in federal funding than the non-donor states receive.
They would also take with them all access to West Coast ports, as well as all western USA water rights including the Columbia River and the Colorado River. Of course, Mike Lee would need to be ejected. Preferably from a canon.
It had launched 4 or 5 years before I joined, so I wasn’t really legacy. I came here to the fediverse when Christian announced the Apollo fuckery, and it was like leaving a collapsing pile of flaming trash to breathing fresh air with good people. Those /r/ stories don’t need to be here.
Reddit is a cesspit. The first time I posted a comment there ~ 15 years ago, someone answered by graphically describing how he would violently rape me.
Since 2017, Utah’s Mike Lee has been on a mission - this time not Mormon - to demolish National Monuments. He began in his own backyard, targeting Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante, for fossil fuel drilling. He’s been colluding with Trump for 8 years to hand over millions of acres of protected land to oil and gas.
The protester was among tens of thousands of people who took to the streets for the demonstrations across Southern California and the rest of the country.
Tens of thousands? There were over FIVE MILLION protesters.
E OVER THIRTEEN MILLION protesters - thank you, Lucidlethargy
I agree, probably some people did downvote because of the “just working” remark. It also appears that many downvotes are an emotional reaction to feeling empathy for anyone associated with ICE. The problem here is twofold:
The McAllen station isn’t ICE, and commenters here don’t seem to understand - or won’t stop feeling outrage long enough to learn - that the objectives, the methods, and the general principles between ICE and Border Patrol are vastly different. It’s like insisting that Grand Canyon and Everglades are identical because they’re both governed under the national parks system.
Seeing the fediverse slide into Reddit hive mind is cringey. People here used to be more open to respectful discussion. A mention of potential humanity in a reviled federal department wouldn’t have been brigaded. On that note, I appreciate your response.
