News@lemmy.world•New York police investigate mysterious cases of people coming out of manholes
9·2 months agoThe time travellers have started arriving to witness the Great Collapse.
Due to the nature of time travel, portals through time can only be opened in an unobserved place. Sewers are just the places most likely be go unobserved, they don’t even bother putting security cameras down there most of the time…
It’d would prevent the elderly from locking in far reaching, irreversible destruction to the environment because they either don’t understand the damage they’re doing to future generations. Either that or they don’t care, which is highly likely.
We can solve most of the political problems in western countries with one simple change: an upper age limit on voting.
If under 18’s can’t vote, why can those over 70? Having worked in residential Aged Care (Australia), I know the oldies are all still voting and they’re voting conservative.
Good artists borrow; Great artists steal.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google won't rest until Gemini is everywhere in your homeEnglish
5·3 months agoI had to install an app on my TV for the first time in ages. There was no way to proceed without allowing Gemini. The main change seems to be other speakers in the house now make comments on my app choices.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•I'd like to change my last name and want suggestions
1·3 months agoEven better if you always write it as “FirstName”
Later in high school when we got computers, someone discovered that if you shuffle your feet on the carpet to build up static then touched the lock (remember when computers came with a set of keys?!) the computer would reset.
“It’s not my fault Miss, the computer has reset! Can you help?”. (This particular teacher was young, attractive, and sometimes didn’t wear a bra).
I had a typing class in early high school on a regular old typewriter. We had computers, but not enough for a whole class to learn typing.

Late Stage Capitalism@lemmy.world•Showing off for everyone after a fresh round of layoffs.
2·3 months agoThat’s M/Y Octopus. It has 2 helipads and it’s own mini-submarine. It was built for Paul Allen, not sure who got it after he died.

UK Police: Look, we acknowledge we arrested a murder victim as they were dying, but have you considered how sad that made our officers? This totally ruined their weekend and killed the vibe around the station.

memes@lemmy.world•Today’s kids don’t have to worry about turning off your PC before you can unplug your mouse or keyboard
1·3 months agoIn primary school we had mostly Atari 800’s with that turtle drawing game (?), but we also had some Apple 2 E’s and Macintosh 2’s.

15·3 months agoI remember having to “park” the hard drive before shutting down. I also remember the excitement when our school got PC’s with a 386 chip and an orange monochrome monitor when everyone else was stuck with green.
I love the idea of a pre-Younger Dryas human civilization with different technology to our own, but Graham Hancock still feels scammy.
