My state passed a similar bill over similar complaints. Every town served by MBTA regional transit needs to zone “as of right” higher density housing near transit. It covers half the state!
It did pass and there has been some new construction. However it’s just zoning, it’s a long term change. We’ll see over time whether it’s a success.
Certainly my town complained, but eventually complied. I believe we have our first six story apartment block near the train station from that mandate, opening soon!
Tracking back to LA: you can do it! There are examples!
Disappointing but not surprising. Most Democrats are not in favor of building housing. It’s too often politically suicidal at the local level to support development.
the councilmembers that voted to oppose (district number in parenthases):
Traci Park (D11)
Jon Lee (D12)
Heather Hutt (D10)
Ysabel Jurado (D14)
Tim McOsker (D15)

Monica Rodriguez (D7)

vote.
Jurado’s web page states: “She focuses on expanding affordable housing, ending homelessness, supporting small businesses, tackling the climate crisis, and building a more just economy for all.”
The class war has a huge generational element.
The boomer is the problem… Owners enable it to leech off working people in exchange for the political cover.
Quality of life for people under 50 will continue to deteriorate until these parasites are dealt with at societal level
Only other solution is to quit being poor
A slim majority said Senate Bill 79 would take away the city’s control over housing growth.
Yes, your decisions have been found to be lacking, so now you’re going to lose control over it.
One month ago, I actually wrote about this bill on the California instance.

If you live in California, you should really be calling your state legislators.
Remember that one idiot that gives a phone call has actually more political influence than 10 scientists that stay silent
Wasn’t this the plot of the poolman movie or something?
