Apple seems really focused on preventing the audio from making it off the device.

Which fine, I believe they’ll make that very difficult. Apple has engineering chops.

But it’s not the fucking point. I ALSO don’t want every watchhole around me making transcriptions of anything I say within earshot of whoever wears one. Which will be way less noticeable than even smart glasses. Say goodbye to having an unrecorded conv in most public places.

The whitewashing of the privacy probs with this is galling.

I was reading up on that and how they plan on processing it in the Secure Enclave part of the watch. My only concern though is as you move more stuff into the enclave, the bigger the attack surface for the entire enclave becomes. And then at what point is more working being done in the enclave than the rest of the watch basically becoming a useless demarcation of security.

Once the technology is implemented and ubiquitous it would only take a secret government mandate and a gag order for the code to be altered to listen for particular words and phrases and log them

I have the perfect timepiece. It tells the time and that’s it. It syncs to atomic time so it’s always accurate and charges by solar so it’s never dead. It has no transmitter or audio capabilities.

Hey! Mine not only tells the time, but also the day of the week and month, and has an integrated alarm clock and stopwatch. Battery lasts for seven years, keeps time to within a few minutes per year, is cheap enough so that I don’t mind wearing it when I’m cycling as I can just replace it if I break it, and it has a celebrity endorsement. Of sorts, anyway.

Yeah no kidding. My calculator watch still works to this day. I did have one of those moments where a math teacher said the classic “you won’t have a calculator in your pocket” and I though that’s right, I have one on my wrist.

From Casio even in 1984, with TOUCHSCREEN where you could write the numbers to calculate, Casio AT-552 Janus or the TC600 from 1980 with touchscreen keyboard. Way ahead of their time.

Given that Apple gladly replaced my Series 5 watch for free when the screen came off, I think I can get another 6 years out of it.
