Prices of USA is like in Russia, while in Europe we are paying 10dollars a gallon. Stop whining.
The problem isn’t that prices are going up. The problem is we’re not paid anywhere near what we should be.
AKA The rich get richer while the poor get poorer.
It’s both. We’re not getting paid the full value of our labor, annual wage cuts are the default, and the only safe ways to save require buying into that same system of oppression.
The problem isn’t any of those things. The problem is that there isn’t enough affordable housing, and not enough housing period. We’re literally in a near-global housing crisis. Everything else would be fine if that wasn’t the case.
Wages are double what they used to be when gas was $2/gallon. So $4/gallon shouldn’t be a problem.
The problem is housing, followed by grocery. And in some areas, followed by energy.
Gas isn’t even on the list. It only feels as bad as it does because of everything else.
Not that it couldn’t be cheaper.
…And not like any country is selfless with their natural resources.
I don’t strongly disagree; housing is one of those safe places to invest in our own oppression.
I would like to propose a solution…
And also the system of global exploitation that gave us cheap goods because we oppressed the global south into accepting low wages (aka imperialism) has reached a point where the capitalists are extracting diminishing returns. This means they have to turn their gaze towards home and exploit us more in order to keep increasing their profit margins.
For the damage it’s doing, fossil fuels should be several times more expensive to compensate in climate change costs and reduce demand.
There should be a carbon tax, but whoever signs it will be the least popular president in history. One of the flaws of democracy is that sometimes the thing that really needs to happen is unpopular with the moronic citizenry that can’t understand why it needs to happen.
There are countries who already do have a CO2 tax.
Yup, they’ve deferred paying the full balance on extraction, refining, and burning for a century. Why would they start now?

Interestingly, it depends on how you measure efficiency.
Per unit of sunlight that hits a patch of land, solar panels capture about 20% of the sunlight that hits. Charging a vehicle battery and powering the motor might result in a 25% loss, so that we’re basically converting about 15% of the sunlight into movement.
In contrast, plants convert only about 1-2% of sunlight energy through photosynthesis. Feeding that plant biomass to be converted into stored energy in an animal, and then that animal moving its muscles to propel a vehicle, we might be talking a huge loss there, too, so that we’re looking at less than 1% of the sunlight being turned into motion.
If you want to most efficiently convert sunlight into movement, bypassing any and all biological processes is probably the most efficient thing to do.

There was a startup that made a splash last year by claiming they had a process that could manufacture organic compounds, including edible fats resembling animal-derived butter, out of nothing but carbon dioxide, water, and energy, through a Fischer-Tropsch process.
I could see a world where people on a spaceship more efficiently use their sunlight to create synthetic edible macronutrients rather than using that same sunlight to try to grow edible plants.
Yeah but plants just like magically appear, solar panels need raw materials, a factory and all the infrastructure that comes with that. Add that mess into your equations.
I feel - apple grows on a tree in my garden, I eat apple, I power bicycle is more efficient than - I mine raw materials, I build factory, I bring all raw materials to factory, I power factory and produce solar panels, I put solar panels in field, hook them up to the power grid, and then think about charging my ebike which also took way more raw materials than a bicycle due to lack of battery and I would still need to power myself.
Add that mess into your equations.

I had the same engine in a truck and a car. The car went 33% further per gallon.
A current model year prius is ~3,250lbs / ~1,500kg and only gets 54mpg highway - what normal sized cars are you thinking of that will get you 60mpg without hypermiling?
Diesel cars (not trucks) have done 60 highway mpg for 2 decades now. The Prius isn’t a very efficient vehicle on the highway, it’s better suited for urban driving where the electric motor and regen help save a bunch of fuel.
Yes, there absolutely are a small handful of diesel cars that get 60mpg or more stock! And if we’re doing alternate powertrains, my EV gets an equivalent to ~130mpg. But since this conversation is about gasoline it’s not really… relevant.
Also, what? The prius is an incredibly efficient vehicle on the highway. The 2026 prius averages 53 mpg city, 54 highway.
