Well when you are in an apocalyptic ai come and want to make a machine good to do everything for you, of course you think it’s selfish for people to not make the machine God.

Its at times like this I am almost glad windows is shit. I could run a decent Linux gaming machine on the windows 11 bare minimum specs.

Aside from tech billionaire being an asshole ……

Let me play devils advocate a bit here. Consider a voice assistant device. They’re cheap thing, basically only a microphone and network card, with minimal compute and memory, yet leverage cloud resources to do far more than such a cheap device could by itself.

Of course the real reason is he wants to hoard all the memory plus monetize your activities and track your every thought, but the point remains that voice assistandt devices can do far more with cloud than they could on their own

Because they’re explicitly deaigned to work that way.

I could install a voice assistant on my PC and have it do everything that the device with the cloud can do (except for steal and sell my data, charge me a monthly subscription fee, spy on me, etc.)

Having it be a standalone device is completely pointless (unless you value having your privacy violated) for the consumer, it only benefits the manufacturer and the service provider (and the databrokers they deal with).

For a long time now, silicon Valley has wanted people to only have thin clients just powerful enough to access their cloud services. AI and datacenter build out is the closest they’ve been to realizing this dream, so of course Altman is going to have this view.

And to that I say go to hell

He’s made statement that data centers are cheap to run, compared to human workers, because humans cost 18 years feeding and teaching them.

So he was saying AI can use some electilricity and give same answer as a human, but the humans coat more. People were like, wow, yeah right, he’s amazing.

Um how much did the data center cost to setup? LLM training, workers to clear the land, resource mining, all the labour to manufacture the resources unto data center infrastructure. Food resources to feed the builders, architects, labourers etc. etc. He glossed over that part.

You know what, let’s try turning Altman into RAM. Surely that would be a better use of his Carbon and Silicon than his body, right? Surely he won’t mind becoming part of a datacenter, right?

    RIGHT???

A lot of the resources involved in running a device are in the manufacturing stage. There’s no point manufacturing a 3D printer for every household if one 3D printer could be shared between 30 households, for example.

He probably doesn’t even need the many billions in his account right now, I, on the other hand, could really use them…

Who’s driving Altman’s car and sleeping in Altman’s bed when he’s at a meeting? Maybe solve the parked-car and empty-building problems first.

Right? Even if he was correct, no one can possibly trust him when we have already seen how they treat workers of ride sharing, work from home, grocery pick-up, website pricing and “convenience” fees. Bad for the workers bad for the consumer.

This time though will be different /s
