Tesla will stop making the Cybertruck next year, according to CEO Elon Musk, who said on X that the company will use the factory space to build more two-seater Cybercab robotaxis.

The decision to wind down the futuristic, steel-clad EV comes after just a few short years of underwhelming sales. When Musk handed over the first few Cybertrucks in late 2023, he predicted Tesla would sell around 250,000 per year. It was supposed to be such a cornerstone of Tesla’s future that, before construction began, the company talked about its Texas factory as the “Cybertruck factory.” But Tesla has instead sold just tens of thousands — total — over the last three years.

If they plan to stop sometime next year, what the heck will they do with the unsold ones they currently park and the surplus they are producing until the closure?

Honestly, I like the look of the cybertruck. I know it’s not the popular opinion, but I like that it challenges the boring cookie-cutter pickup truck design.

I think it bothers people that it doesnt fit the “traditional” idea of what a pickup should look like, but to me that’s a good thing. To me, the trad pickup design is ugly anyway. Ford F150? Ugly. Dodge Ram? Ugly. Chevy Silverado? Ugly! So yeah, the minimalist wedge-shape is a great way to shake up field. It’s a fun departure.

I also like that it’s an EV pickup. But I wish it were better at being an EV pickup, instead of a glorified grocery-getter. It seems to fail at simple hauling / off-road / towing tasks.

I do not like the build quality either. Or the stainless steel bodywork. Or the plastic bits. But many of these things could have been refined in later model years.

And of course the elephant in the room: Musk put his musky stank all over it. It’s synonymous with him, and he’s a festering Nazi shit-pustule. So that kills it for me.

I wish some other EV brand would have done the Cybertruck. I think in the right hands it would have been better.

I agree with you. It piqued my interest when it was first being teased and musk still had some plausibility that he was competent and well intentioned.

I live 8 miles from work in a rural area. I drive gravel roads every day, get feet of snowfall at a time, and I also have a need to regularly hall large materials. I recently got into a new to me 10 year old truck but was driving a sedan before that which was unsafe due to the heavy snows. I’d love a real electric truck and one that doesn’t have a stupid bed height. What I need isn’t available but there’s no reason it shouldn’t be. A 4x4 slate (w/o Bezos connected preferebly) would be sweet, a hylux champ, or a properly designed and built cybertruck would be sweet. I don’t want all the bells and whistles and gimmicks, just a cost appropriate tool to get me from a to b and to support the work I do.

I recall someone fantasizing about piles of flipped cybertrucks. Well, in written form, forgot if on here or elsewhere. Welp, their dream is ruined.

I see them all over the place. A day doesn’t go buy that I don’t see a few. They had sales.

I suspect the real problem are the sales patterns, which are probably very bad. Because of Musk’s increasingly poor reputation, they’ve probably completely stopped selling new ones, and nobody wants used ones, so why build more dead inventory?

His terrible behavior has destroyed his car company, which is on a steady, inexorable slide toward bankruptcy. Trump will keep Tesla alive through the 2028 election, for access to his money, but once Trump is out of office, Tesla will go off the cliff.

If Musk was halfway smart he’d sell control of Tesla to one of the other majors (yes I know it has a listed value greater than most of them). By handing it over to someone who isn’t overtly a nazi the brand could be revitalised and Muskrat could bank the money, have his remaining tesla shareholding grow again and make billions off SpaceX as well.

      Fortunately he’s not that smart

You think those cars will live long enough to become Oldtimers in the future?

When will the face of the company stop being a nazi? Is there a plan for that?

I can’t wait for my kids to finally stop pointing them out and saying, “Dad, there’s that car you hate.”

I’m a school bus driver. The only cars that elementary school kids get excited about are the ones that piss me off: cybertrucks, teslas in general, corvettes, lamborghinis. No other cars exist for kids.

I like loudly pointing them out to my wife with, “Hey babe, look. It’s one of those Nazi cars!”

It’s really fun when there are other people around, especially the owner.

Not really. There’s a massive stockpile of them that they’re trying to flog to the US govt. That might have become much more difficult since last week.

        Only slightly.

For the most part, choosing which vehicles a federal agency will buy is entirely an Executive Branch thing.
