Please note that NSFW/NSFL videos must be labeled as such or they will be deleted

Edit: also keep in mind that initial information in these situations can often be inaccurate. Trusted outlets have conflicting reports about whether a suspect has been detained.

Edit 2: the campus has officially stated they release the initial subject. Donald Trump has stated Charlie Kirk is dead.

So yesterday was the 9/11 anniversary. There was also a school shooting on the same day this piece of human garbage was rightfully shot in the jugular. I read and scour the news every day and use Google News as an aggregator. So does my wife. You had to scroll down about 10-15 stories to even get to the school shooting, and I swear… I didn’t see much coverage about 9/11 at all. Not like they usually do every year. But here we are with Charlie Kirk’s stupid fucking face plastered everywhere as if he is someone to be admired. 9/11 and the aftermath of the war on terror DESTROYED this country. As far as I am concerned, the terrorists fucking won. All progress made up to that point began to faulter and collapse as the divisions between people beating the drums of war in that time and those that didn’t want to necessarily go to war or a multifront full scale war grew further and further. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back leading us to now, where a bigoted, misogynistic, homophobic, piece of shit like Charlie Kirk even makes the fucking headlines. What a fucking time to be alive.

Hey, be respectful. This man really put his neck out for his beliefs. He offered himself as tribute to the 2nd amendment, and we should admire his conviction. The proper way to celebrate would be to honour his wishes and show zero empathy. It’s the least we can do for him.

It’s a rare man that has the courage to rationalize senseless violence in defense of unrestricted access to deadly weapons, and it is even rarer to literally make that the hill you die on. He showed us all by example how you truly live your creed.

Its in moments like these that I really appreciate non corporate social media. Everywhere outside the fediverse all I see is people freaking out, acting like this is the first shooting to ever happen in the united states. Even supposed leftists are just like “I don’t agree with the man but no one deserves to get killed over their beliefs”.

They seem to have forgotten that people get killed over way dumber shit all the time. Personally I care about all the other shootings a lot more than this one. Especially the school shooting in Colorado that happened the same afternoon, which is being mostly ignored.

There are even lots of comments that condemn anyone making light of his death, or even just making comments about his politics. This dissent they condemn is almost nowhere to be found though, because algorithms bury it all straight to the bottom. The only opinion allowed to be seen is “I’m horrified look at me”.

Coming back to a place where a real discussion can be had makes me realize just how important this project really is. We need more spaces that we truly own.

There’s a lot of conservatives seemingly gearing up for war saying shit like “The left doesn’t understand what they’ve unleashed.”

Conservatives get to kill who they want and the moment someone kills one of them they want to murder the left.

(At least that’s what the bot-like conservative social media looks like.)

It’s all fun and games until Republicans use this as an excuse to further enforce their fascist agendas. Just glad this happened in Utah and not Illinois or California. Blue states will likely bear the brunt of the repercussions if there are any.

Don’t get me wrong, he got what he advocated for, I’m certainly not crying or really feeling anything about his death but huh, I guess dude FAFO’ed. I just don’t find the “good guy with a gun” comment appropriate here that’s all even if a small sliver of me goes “yeah, kinda, yeah” because more than likely that guy is very much not a good guy, probably very mentally ill.

          Just my thoughts.

From the bits I saw of the alleged shooter getting arrested, to me it looks like the guy was planning on getting caught. Balding old white men who can shoot like that don’t strike me as the type who run away.

EDIT: Waiting for confirmation on whether the actual suspect is caught or not.

A statement released by the university said a “single shot was fired on campus toward a visiting speaker. Police are investigating now, suspect in custody.” A university spokeswoman later told the New York Times that police had determined the person detained earlier was not the shooter, and that no suspect was currently in custody.

Looks like the guy initially arrested turned out to not be involved (maybe just another guy with a high powered rifle? Don’t know, must make things hard in the US). Or have they since arrested someone else?

Probably one of those “open carry” dipshits, hanging around to show off his gun, and when someone gets shot, he’s the first guy they focus on, giving the real shooter a head start on his escape. Nice job being a witless accomplice.

Any politician that completely supports Trump is fair game at this point. Things will not return to normal by talking. If you dont wanna live in a dictatorship wake the fuck up. If you live in the US (i luckily dont) then learn how to use a gun, because its gonna get much much worse than the way it is right now.

There’s so many layers of irony to this event. You can’t make this shit up.

A man, who made a career downplaying gun violence and advocating against empathy for its victims, was shot while giving a talk about his favorite topic under a tent that said “Prove me wrong”, on a college campus in a state that just lifted its ban on weapons on college campuses. His own quotes can be endlessly used to shut down any outrage at his ironic demise.

Charlie Kirk’s final moments were spent being definitively and completely proven wrong.

If this wasn’t going to used as an excuse to ban Trans people from owning firearms and for further violence against the opposition, it would be hilarious.

Interesting reflection of Lemmy demographics that I haven’t seen much “But he has a wife and kids, we shouldn’t be celebrating his death uwu” rhetoric. Apparently even the most staunch centrists here acknowledge the harm Toiler Paper USA has done to the US populace.

There’s some insane laundering of his legacy going on now over on Reddit and through American news outlets though, as if he didn’t call Paul Pelosi’s attacker a “patriot” or dismiss school shootings as a necessary evil of the 2nd amendment. MSNBC even fired a political analyst over calling him “divisive.”

I’m not one of those people who blame every ill of the world on the “neoliberal cucks” or whatever, but damn if they don’t have a point regarding the corporate capture of the United States news media currently.

Photo of the new alleged suspect:

This guy doesn’t look like an expert marksman, but I guess looks can be deceiving.

    https://abcnews.go.com/US/charlie-kirk-shooting-fbi-appeals-tips-manhunt-continues/story?id=125469211

Cartridges with “transgender and anti-fascist” writing on them were found.

Oh, were they? That’s super convenient. Almost thoughtful of the shooter to leave that kind of evidence behind but evade capture.

A lot of people seem to be writing on gun cartridges these days. Kind of a new trend I guess?

Very confused how we ended up here, but started here:
