Trying to actually relax has been the hardest thing I’ve tried doing in my life. Took me 9 months of willingly doing “nothing” (i.e. chillin’) before I stopped waking up with anxiety caused by an absence of stress.

Modern life creates anxiety. I won’t assume you’re American, but here in America we’re programmed to feel guilt while not being “productive”. We take pride in overwork and abstaining from rest. It’s one of the greatest successes capitalism propaganda has ever created. The South in particular eats it up.

Not American, but I can tell you that it’s the same in Romania. I was raised from the start to believe that I had no value as a being unless I generated something. And it started well before Capitalism hit our country, these things were passed down generation to generation - I’m not just talking out of my ass on this one, I’d say roughly 80% of Millenials I’ve met in 34 years of existence in this country have shared at least the gist of my experience.

Grandma always told me “if your leg isn’t broken, you’re going to school,” and this happened while I was running fevers of 39°C and my face was leaking from every hole.

Yeah that’s how it is here. It’s crazy that it worked so well on us.

Worked aces, yes! Had to have a system breakdown after doing Overtime for a month* straight just to understand that it’s unsustainable - weekends included, 9AM to 11PM. Needed the money for Christmas.

Also important to note a lot of social media tries to influence this as well. “Hustle and grind” is/was championed by corporations trying to extract more labor from people. Unfortunately because of that, many people see influencers with nice houses and flashy cars and fake morning routines and think that’s the key to success rather than being born/married into a rich family or being one of the 0.001% who gets super rich otherwise.

Very true. The whole idea is to drain as much from regular folks as possible because we can always make more people!

I read this comment moments after debating with myself over whether to call out tomorrow or not (and then finally making the call.) I’ve been sick for days and right now I’m lucky to go 10 minutes without sneezing.

The stupid guilt is so ingrained, I have to remind myself that resting when I’m sick is a good thing - not just for me, but for everyone I work with. This country has its priorities all backwards.

Exactly! As long as a person lives and breathes, they are literally incapable of doing pure “nothing,” in my opinion.

Of course, I am aware that people who say others do “nothing” actually mean “nothing productive when considered within the context of the Grindset,” but screw that…

Nope! Relaxing, for me, is listening to music (wihout distractions, because I like studying the details), watching movies (in ways in which David Lynch would accept), playing a game, reading a book, etc. I’m honestly not all that attached to my phone in general, never caught my attention in any significant way (don’t do Social Media in general, don’t chat that much with people over text, mostly use it for calls, music, and some background noise when cooking, cleaning, etc.)

I would listen to music but in 90% of times that music is controlled by my phone and my mind always seems to get lost on Lemmy while looking for the music controls.

Gaming and computers in general became more stress than fun a while ago and never liked tv. I should pick up reading again but in a way thats still staring my eyes at a flat surface.

I highly recommend trying to listen to albums in their entirety, if for no other reason than it makes it easier to turn it on and then not touch anything for the rest of the album. Personally, vinyl works really well for me.

Why is daydream Homer closer to the modern colours than real Homer? Maybe we’re seeing modern Simpsons through Homer’s daydreams.
